Total Parenteral Nutrition
Total Parenteral Nutrition also known as hyperalimentation, or TPN for short, is the intravenous administration of all required nutrients (fat, protein, vitamins, etc.) that a patient may need if they are not able to consume their diet by normal eating and digestion. TPN is given over several hours or continuously and administered using a preset pump. Examples of indications for TPN as determined by a physician include: a non-functioning GI tract, absorption issues such as small bowel syndrome, pancreatitis, and major surgery that has left the patient malnourished, or intestinal obstruction or fistulas. Apple Infusion pharmacists consult with the patient’s physician to determine the correct formula based on the patient’s current needs.
